How long has it been since you were the interviewee? Do you remember how nerve-racking it is? Ease your candidate’s nervousness by being conversational and friendly. Start your interview by offering refreshments and making small talk. Find some kind of commonality with the candidate, so they feel they can connect with you better (for example, maybe it’s snowing outside, and you both love skiing). The more comfortable and open the candidate is, the better they’ll be able to express their answers to your questions. You’ll get a better perspective on how they’ll be as an employee rather than just a nervous candidate.
