Chicago

Take a look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs reports and you’ll see the information technology sector is still booming in spite of slow national growth. Other industries may take the occasional hit but IT continues to surge forward. Where does Chicago stack up in the grand scheme of the market? We took a look at some supply and demand statistics to find out about the health of the job market.

What’s the IT workforce supply in Chicago?

Over a two year period, there was a decline in the number of job seekers within the Chicago market. From February ’12 to January ’13, there were 18,214 IT professionals searching for employment in the Chicago metropolitan area. The following year from February ’13 to January ’14, that number had dropped down to 17,362. That’s an overall change of -4.68%.

A number of factors can be behind this movement. Rising living costs, increasing real estate taxes, and a spike in gas prices may be causing potential candidates to migrate elsewhere. Often, the availability (or lack thereof) of open positions may compel some to move to other pastures. However, the latter doesn’t seem to be the case in Chicago.

What’s the IT workforce demand in Chicago?

The demand seems to be almost overwhelming. All across the information technology spectrum, the demand surpasses the supply.

CareerBuilder numbers, collected from the number of positions posted on their job board, indicated that there was an overall gain in demand over the last few years. February ’12 to January ’13 saw 53,207 positions in the Chicago job market and a year later, that number had risen to 57,266. That’s an overall increase of 7.63%.
